As I have posted before, I don’t wash my hair frequently. I like the way my hair looks and feels, and it is so much healthier, too.
I have been flirting with the idea of washing with just conditioner for a few weeks now, and have been semi-obsessed with trying Wen, a cleansing conditioner. The trouble is, it costs quite a lot and I could not justify the cost.
I was googling the issue again yesterday when I stumbled on several articles regarding cowashing. These people don’t use cleansing conditioners, they just.wash.with.conditioner. !!!! I was so excited! No new special product to buy, and I could use the bottle of conditioner I already have in my shower!
I gave it a try last night, and the results are a bit mixed, mostly due to my error. Cowashing requires only three items:
1. A silicone free conditioner
2. Conditioner to be scrubbed into the scalp as well as coating the shaft of the hair.
3. Time – you have to make sure water saturates your hair before you begin, plus you must leave the conditioner on for a while.
I started out by getting my hair sopping wet. Check. I out some conditioner on my hand to scrub my scalp, but it made me really nervous. I have not put conditioner on my scalp in YEARS – everyone says it makes hair limp and greasy. My hair was already on day 5 so I was feeling like things were going to be gross. So, I wimped out and only scrubbed a little bit of conditioner in. I knew it had only gotten on the too of my scalp, not so much the sides of my head, but I was so nervous about a greasebomb head I couldn’t bring myself to use more. I conditioned the shaft of my hair and let it sit for the remainder of my shower, when I rinsed it all out. I let it air dry, as usual.
Verdict: it totally worked! The mixed results are only because of my nervousness. The scalp area that was conditioned is light and fluffy, not at all greasy. My hair is super soft. The sides of my scalp (which were not conditioned well) are still oily. Clearly, the next time I try this, I need to really goop up my scalp and go for it!
